There was no issue in doing so and we didn't pay the "inconvenience fee" like TicketMaster would charge. And, third, while he didn’t show a lot of emotion on his face, he was singing and playing with soul and energy, often snapping that right arm down to pick up the rhythm and get the desired punch out of his drummer… so, dare I say it, it seemed that quite possibly he was having fun.
We could see everything but I relied on the giant screens for taking pictures. Hunter wrote and performed quick 3-minute pop songs with a mix of blues, swing and jazz chords, which benefitted from two saxophones an alto and a baritone providing a lot of counter melody, similar to lots of rockabilly. Tour … Reviewed January 28, 2019 This concert was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!
I loved it so much I want to go again before Celine finishes her residency at the Colosseum. Mez Clough – drums Change ), LondonJazz is a not-for profit venture, but may occasionally take on work as a paid publicist and/or sell advertising packages. ( Log Out / So, there was some satisfaction as we planned to attend the middle night of three sold-out shows in the somewhat historic Chicago Theater, on State St. in the heart of the city’s Loop, and read the set-list from the previous night’s show. He had played a 22-song set, including “Wild Night,” “Moondance,” “Enlightenment,” “Cleaning Windows,” and then ended the show with a two of his earliest hits: “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Gloria,” from his days in the band, Them. We didn't have the best seats, Infact we had 2nd mezzanine at the front row. Sir Van Morrison at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham on Monday, October 28 2019 (Image: KEVIN COOPER) Early on, a soaring St Dominic's Preview and a … Second, he seemed to have no regard for a previously established set list, he was calling out choices, sometimes speaking to members of his band while others were soloing, and he was following his muse, and the band — in addition to being crack players in their own right, well rooted in his large song catalog — had to be prepared to switch gears, switch instruments (his guitar player had several electrics, an acoustic and two lap steels within reach, and his bass player moved smoothly back and forth from an electric bass guitar and a stand-up acoustic), and dive in to wherever the next selection required of them, having learned all the parts by heart, as the only person I saw using sheet music was occasionally Van himself. He wears those dark glasses so he isn’t so reminded of his audience because of his fear. What a shame! ).” Here, where most have performed it as a more saccharin sounding ballad, Morrison performed it with more of an up-tempo swing beat, Morrison playing sax in harmony with keyboardist Paul Moran on trumpet. Which he followed, after barely a pause, with Don Gibson’s classic “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” which Van had covered with more of a Celtic folk leaning back on his 1991 album, “Hymns to the Silence.” CD review by Adam Sieff) Here’s Van Morrison at 74, a hard working man with a busy tour schedule releasing his sixth album in four years. ( Log Out / And he wasn’t done yet with the blues yet. “I Get a Kick Out of You” (Cole Porter cover), “Baby, Please Don't Go” / “Got My Mojo Working”, “Think Twice Before You Go” (John Lee Hooker cover), “It's All in the Game” (Tommy Edwards cover).
None of those were sung. In December, Morrison released his 40th studio album, The Prophet Speaks. I am 60 years old and went to his concert to hear his greatest hits, like "Brown Eyed Girl", Tupelo Honey, Crazy Love, Domino, and many others. So, having carefully written down the previous night’s set list, I was hoping we’d get something close to Wednesday night’s show.
If someone was expecting it to be a nostalgia-filled concert, however, they might have been slightly disappointed: even though the O2 Arena has a strong relevance in the history of Led Zeppelin – here in 2007 they played their only full gig since the death of John Bonham – the singer didn’t stray away too much from the path he took in recent years. Overall a great show, but she started very late and the show was a bit on the short side.
Able to sense what should happen in a song before it does, the 73-year-old proved as much a conductor as singer, a conduit for ideas as much as a saxophonist. It was an alto saxophone.
She sounded amazing. At 73 years old, Van Morrison could honestly play whatever he wanted on stage and probably still get a standing ovation.
Speaking of which, on Friday, February 16, 2018 Eagle Rock Entertainment is set to release a new live concert DVD/Blu-ray entitled Van Morrison in Concert. But clearly, “Van the Man” had something else in mind. Morrison’s spectacular backing band, and each member’s largely wordless dialogue with their colleagues and the headliner, went beyond the aural faculties of the songs.
Side screens provide an excellent experience for all. Top form. Van Morrison review: The musician’s deft singing and resonant voice defied age, genre and rules Tuesday at the Chicago Theatre. The two already played at the same edition of the festival in 2013, the year the festival was born, and Van Morrison must have liked it as he came back to play at BluesFest every year but in 2017. After an hour and a half the concert ends with Plant singing his lungs out to “Whole Lotta Love”, this one played faithfully to the original version, in front of an ecstatic audience which greets the band with a standing ovation. Probably 40 to 50,000 jammed into that end of the Fest.
From “Baby, Please Don’t Go” which he recorded in 1964 with his former band Them (coincidently featuring Jimmy Page on this song), to his classic “Moondance”, to “Broken Record” from his second last album, “Versatile”, released just last year. Van and Hunter sang and blew harmonicas in duet for the classic jumping blues, “Help Me,” by Sonny Boy Williamson. Great review, I am looking forward to seeing him next week in LA. He walked on stage at 8 pm did not say hello or introduce himself. The words “buyer beware” probably apply more to concert ticket prices these days, given that more often than not, it’s very hard for the average ticket buyer to get tickets for a show at the ticket’s printed price, and many of us end up purchasing through secondary outlets (read: scalpers).
9. Van Morrison pitched it just right on his second night at the Roundhouse. Brian Quincy Newcomb has found work as rock critic and music journalist since the early 80's, contributing over the years to Billboard Magazine, Paste, The Riverfront Times, and The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
This concert was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!
Their interactions provided behind-the-scenes looks at not only the architecture of the arrangements, but made visible the seemingly divergent blend of cooperative looseness and intense focus required for such in-the-now creativity to thrive. Van Morrison’s deft singing and resonant voice defied age, genre and rules Tuesday at the Chicago Theatre. A haunting version of “Saint James Infirmary” trekked to New Orleans, with Morrison’s sax duetting with a trumpet to send out the funereal standard with a decided swagger. With his virtuosic band, well-seasoned to the flux of his repertoire as he mines his formidable catalogue on tour, he cast a compelling spell with a disarming light touch that owed much to his jazz roots, where there’s many a choice to be made in the treatment of a tune – and Morrison, in tune with the the spirit of the venue, showed how the artist knows which choice to make, to make it work just right on the night. Morrison picked up a harmonica and soloed with a jazzy flair, and at song’s end he barked out a command to his electric guitar player, Dave Keary, who immediately played the opening licks of a song medley that Morrison has been playing for the last year or longer, starting with “Baby Please Don’t Go,” by blues icon Muddy Waters, which segued into a song from his early band Them, “Don’t Start Crying Now.” This then segued back to another Waters classic, “I Got My Mojo Working,” and then to Morrison’s own blues tribute, “Playhouse,” clearly sending the message that the singer sees himself as an artist in the blues and jazz tradition, rather than as the rock star many have come to see him as. Van has been my favorite music artist for over 30 years but not after tonight. This is one of the most sexy and beautiful songs of all time. The Expanded Edition includes four new mixes of the tracks ‘Three Chords And The Truth’, ‘Early Days’, ‘Nobody In Charge’ and ‘Does Love Conquer All?’ and is released today (November 29th 2019) on Exile/Caroline International.
As the last song – “Ballerina”, another old one – is coming to an end, the singer takes the microphone from its stand and finishes singing the last verses while walking off stage; the band keeps playing the coda and then follows Morrison while the crowd applauds them loudly.
Wonderful venue for a concert! That soon gave way to bluesy rock ‘n’ roll with a unified “Baby, Please Don’t Go” and “Got My Mojo Working,” fueled by an upright bass, electric and acoustic guitars, drums, percussion/marimba, piano, a phenomenal backup singer and Morrison himself on harmonica.
And so, the concert starts, and continues with some songs from his two most recent records, great tracks such as “Turn it Up” and “The May Queen” and some other Led Zeppelin songs; in some cases, like with “Black Dog”, the songs are rearranged, some others are closer to their studio counterpart, like “The Rain Song”. ( Log Out / Clearly in charge of the band, in a move that would become familiar during the 90+ minute set, he would snap his arm down to signal he wanted to hear more snap from his drummer’s snare. Again, the arrangement favored jazz soloing all around the band, including a couple nice solo moments from the bass player. 11:50 AM, Feb. 28, 2018: An earlier version of this article said Van Morrison began his concert holding a tenor saxophone. Ugh.
November 8, 2019 4:05PM ET Van Morrison’s Essential Albums From teenage garage-rocker to Sixties folk mystic and beyond — we survey more than 50 … This new version, even though it’s different from the one all Zeppelin’s fan know and love, gives a pretty interesting new spin to the song and serves well to introduce today’s Robert Plant with a clear message: “Hey, I’m still Robert Plant, but I’m not just the former singer of Led Zeppelin”, he evolved, he added new sounds and influences to his music and he doesn’t refrain from showing it. She’s picked the brains of rock stars ... “I make beats every day.
Like many things in life, there’s no way we’d get to hear every one of your desired favorites from an artist who’s made over 40 albums in his 50-plus year career, so you aren’t going to get everything you want… we didn’t get “Into the Mystic,” “In the Garden,” or even “Wild Night,” but we did get a good solid 100 minutes of heart felt music from a nearly 75 year old musical idol and icon… so we got what we needed, and it was sweet, and good.
