Coming of age novel packed with obsession and compulsion, Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 22, 2010. when it got into nothing more than a love-hate relationship between the older surfer's wife and pikelet (one of the younger surfers) i started to be disappointed and the last part of the book left me feeling empty-sando (the guru) not a perfect person by any means skates away to fame and fortune while his wife commits suicide, pikelets buddy turns to drug running and is shot and pikelet goes through a failed marriage and spends time in institutions-his life not coming close to the promise shown at the start of the book. Surfing is not the focus of this book, but the life within a particular surfer who grew up quickly and found out that slashing and bashing against the norm is maybe sometimes worth it and sometimes not. I love all things regarding the sea, swimming, diving, surfing, even though I am not really a surfer; I have tried, but it's harder than it looks!
